Purpose
As Kitchen Porter, cleanliness and hygiene are your number one priorities. You’d read Food Safety procedures as a bedtime story if you could. When it comes to fast pace, you’re Usain Bolt, but doesn’t mean you skimp on the detail – there’s no plate left unturned, and you don’t just scratch the surfaces, you make them shine. Your motto is “there’s no ‘I’ in team” and you revel in being a team player.
Primary Responsibilities
- Cleanliness and hygiene are your number one priorities – you maintain a high level of workplace hygiene and safety in the kitchen and all related areas.
- With your eagle-eye for detail, all cooking utensils, cutlery, crockery and kitchen equipment and appliances used are cleaned until they shine, using either industrial washing machines or hand washing where appropriate and subsequently sanitised and stored appropriately.
- You’re always on hand to assist with the assembly and preparation of cooking ingredients as required, such as grating, peeling, chopping, preparing batters, garnishes and seasonings and any other reasonable requests.
- You’re efficient when it comes to adhering to the cleaning schedule for walls, floors and general kitchen workspaces.
- Food storage areas including fridges, cool rooms and dry goods stores, are cleaned and maintained under your watch, ensuring that principles of food hygiene are being observed and any hazards or problems are reported to your manager immediately.
- You remove rubbish regularly, and clean industrial bins on a daily basis.
- Proactively, you check cleaning equipment to ensure it’s in effective working order, reporting any faults or repairs as required.
- You’re a people person at heart and you’re confident in attending to guest requests efficiently, constantly striving to provide an exceptional guest experience.
- Food safety is always front of mind and you ensure all food safety policies and logs are adhered too and completed daily.
- Your communication is unrivalled, and you always provide a clear and concise handover for the next shift.
- Keep your manager informed of any problems and unusual matters.
- You’ll jump in and help out other departments during peak busy times as needed and within your scope.
- This isn’t an exhaustive list – your manager may have other reasonable tasks or instructions on occasion.
Skills, Experience and requirements
- You possess a current food handlers’ certificate/food safety certificate.
You can physically meet the demands for this role including:
- Constant standing and walking.
- Frequent carrying of plates etc. and use of fine motor skills requiring hand dexterity to grip knives.
- Frequent gripping of cleaning products and cloths used for wiping down and cleaning all kitchen areas.
- Frequent pushing and pulling, walking on uneven surfaces, including tiles, carpet and kitchen flooring.
- Regular lifting and relocating of delivered goods.
- Regular bending, reaching and lifting of all kitchen and floor equipment, utensils and crockery.
- Shift work will be required on a rotating roster and may include late shifts. Flexibility is a must.
