Are you passionate about sustainable urban development and ready to make a significant impact on Rotorua's future? We're seeking a dedicated Kaitohu Kaupapa Here – Senior Policy Planner to join our Housing, Growth and Partnerships team at the Civic Centre.
After a period of low growth, Rotorua has experienced sustained levels of growth from 2013 and it needs to provide over 9,000 homes over 30 years to meet the District’s housing need. Rising to this challenge is exciting for Council planners who are implementing a comprehensive program to accommodate both residential and business growth. Council has recently approved a Future Development Strategy that provides an excellent platform for doing policy planning work.
As our Senior Policy Planner, you'll play a crucial role in delivering Council priorities and statutory RMA requirements related to the sustainable growth and development of Rotorua. This position offers a unique opportunity to influence the city's future through strategic planning and policy development.
You will lead and manage specific growth and resource management projects, formulate, monitor, and review the District Plan, and oversee plan changes and variations as per the Resource Management Act 1991. Additionally, you will provide expert policy and planning advice to internal teams, develop and maintain relationships with mana whenua, iwi, and government agencies, and prepare submissions on regional and central government RMA proposals.
The ideal candidate will as a minimum have a bachelor's degree in Resource and Environmental Planning with extensive experience in RMA policy development and strategic planning. A sound knowledge of the NZ planning system and associated legislation is essential. Excellent project management, communication, and problem-solving skills are also required, along with the ability to work independently and collaboratively on large projects.
Desirable qualifications include a master's degree in Resource and Environmental Planning and a diploma in project management. Highly developed interpersonal skills, the ability to influence others, and experience working with senior decision-makers are also advantageous.
We offer a dynamic work environment, diverse and challenging projects, and the opportunity to shape Rotorua's future. This role provides the chance to make a real difference in community development and sustainability.
If you chose to, Rotorua is a great place to live, providing the opportunity for excellent work-life balance, with over 18 lakes and a number of otherworldly geothermal parks to explore. Rotorua is also a haven for mountain bikers of all levels with 200km of world-class trails. Alternatively, you can experience spa and wellness therapies, and wander through the beautiful Whakarewarewa Forest in the evenings after work or on the weekends.
Join us in creating a thriving, sustainable Rotorua for current and future generations. Take the next step in your planning career and apply today!
