Avant Mutual is looking for a General Counsel to join our team on a permanent, full-time basis in our Sydney CBD office. 

The General Counsel will lead the group legal team and be responsible for a range of strategic corporate and commercial matters, while safeguarding Avant’s reputation by ensuring Avant stays ahead of potential legal risks and enabling the Executive Team to make informed strategic choices within an acceptable legal risk profile. As the Group Corporate Counsel, you will work closely with the business to develop trusted relationships with multiple stakeholder groups. 

 

The key responsibilities include: 

  • Provide expert legal advice across a broad range of areas.  
  • Advise Avant on its legal rights and obligations and identify solutions to eliminate or mitigate legal and regulatory risk.  
  • Ensure that the General Counsel and Legal Team are informed of new or proposed legislation or regulatory activity that may affect Avant’s operations and have oversight as necessary to ensure regulatory changes are fully embedded in the business.  
  • Liaise with regulators, government officials, department or tribunals on matters affecting Avant where required in conjunction with the Governance Risk & Resilience function.  
  • Negotiate, draft, and settle all major client contracts, vendor contracts, and other commercial arrangements to safeguard Avant’s interest. 
     

To be successful in this role you will have: 

  • Bachelor of Laws degree or similar tertiary qualification. 
  • Current NSW Corporate Legal Practitioner Practising Certificate. 
  • Successful track record in an in-house corporate legal capacity. 
  • Private practice experience in providing commercial legal advice. 
  • Previous experience working in an Insurance and/or Australian financial services environment would be beneficial.
