Avant is looking for a Financial Accountant to join our business on a fixed-term contract until end of September to support with BAU activities and assist during year-end reporting. This role is based in our Sydney CBD office with a hybrid working arrangement. 

 

The key responsibilities include:

  • Prepare and review the accounting entries for insurance premiums, claims reserves, and reinsurance transactions.
  • Ensure the correct accounting treatment for insurance-related revenue and expenses, ensuring compliance with relevant accounting standards (e.g., AASB 17 – Insurance Contracts).
  • Reconcile insurance-related accounts, including premium receivables, claims reserves, and reinsurance balances.
  • Prepare the Insurance Duty Returns
  • Assist in the preparation of quarterly APRA returns.
  • Assist in the preparation of technical accounting papers.
  • Stay updated on Australian financial regulations and insurance accounting practices to ensure the company’s compliance.
  • Support the internal audit function and ensure the company complies with all regulatory standards, including APRA regulations and ASIC requirements.

 

To be successful in this role you will have:

  • CA/CPA qualification
  • Minimum of 3-5 years of experience in financial accounting, preferably within the insurance or financial services industry.
  • Strong understanding of Australian Insurance accounting practices, including that of premiums, claims reserves, and reinsurance.
  • Experience with Australian tax laws and regulatory requirements (GST, BAS, stamp duty, APRA regulations).
  • Experience with financial reporting and compliance with AASB standards.
