The program 

 

The Humanitarian Settlement Program (HSP) offers vital support to refugees and humanitarian entrants settling in Australia, including one-on-one casework, basic household goods, orientation, and housing support. It also includes practical support like helping our client’s link with Centrelink, Employment, Medicare, schools, and other local services.

 

The opportunity 

Community Orientation volunteers will assist clients with practical settlement needs such as attending health appointments, shopping together, catching public transport and connecting the family with services in the community. In connection with the Humanitarian Settlement Program orientation outcomes, you will also help them build new skills and confidence in speaking English so that they will be able participate in and enjoy Australian life.

HSP volunteers are friendly, accepting, and flexible individuals, who are motivated to support the learning and comfortable settlement of newly arrived refugees. All the areas within the program are supported by the Red Cross caseworkers and Volunteer Engagement Officer. Training and ongoing development opportunities are offered as part of the program.

As part of the Humanitarian Settlement Program, you will contribute to creating a friendly and inclusive environment that will help refugees feel welcome. Your impact will be tangible, and you will see your contribution making a different to someone’s life.   

 

Application requirements

  • For this role you will be required to undertake a National Police Check, organised through RedCross and renewed every 5 years.
  • To submit this application, you will need to upload a recent copy of your CV and/or provide details for two professional references.
  • The role will also require you to hold or apply for a Working with Children Check or Working with Vulnerable People Check depending on your State/Territory.  Red Cross can assist you to apply for this check.
