- Ability to commit to at least one hour per week on a regular basis (flexible around your holidays and other commitments)
Why Choose to volunteer with Red Cross?
- You can help improve lives and create a positive impact in your community
- It’s an opportunity to enhance your skills & knowledge & gain new experiences
- You’ll be helping Red Cross to support vulnerable people across Australia
The program
The Learner Driver Mentor Program supports new drivers to become licenced by allowing them use of a vehicle for on-road practice while a volunteer mentor supervises them. This program is designed to assist learners who may not have ready access to a suitable supervising driver and/or vehicle but would like to gain their licence for employment and social inclusion reasons. The program may support the learner in logging some or all of the required practice hours.
Volunteers provide a door-to-door service, helping clients strengthen their capacity to participate in community life, maintain or regain independence by getting their driving licence. Having good social connections is essential for all aspects of health and well-being, and transportation in a regional area such as Coffs Harbour is a key ingredient.
The opportunity
This position is all about supervising and mentoring learner drivers (that is: people on their Ls). Once you have been matched up with a leaner, you can arrange suitable times to go out driving with them. You may at times also be able to assist with some of the administration required for obtaining a licence such as completing forms and taking them to their driving test in the provided Red Cross vehicle.
Red Cross will ensure you have training, ongoing support and access to other opportunities within the world’s largest humanitarian network. Red Cross will provide the necessary vehicles, fuel, and insurances.
For this role you will need good conversational skills and the ability to relate to and empathise with a broad range of people, including those with different lived experiences, abilities, and cultures.
You will be comfortable educating and supporting your driver.
The impact
As a volunteer, you will help vulnerable people from diverse backgrounds improve their quality of life by educating them and giving the necessary experience and skills to drive safely. You will have the opportunity to learn from many people’s diverse history and knowledge, as well as feeling the satisfaction of giving back to others.
In regional NSW a driver’s licence allows you to fully participate in the community. Without one, transportation and life in general can be challenging.
Getting their licence could mean the difference between getting a job, further studies, getting the kids to school, health appointments or taking their family members to do the grocery shopping. Regardless of their individual circumstance, all participants in the program benefit immensely from the freedom and opportunity of a driver’s licence
Application requirements
- You will be required to undertake a National Police Check, which will be organised through Red Cross.
- Provide a one page Cover Letter outlining brief employment history, community activities, interests, additional language skills if applicable and/or hobbies and provide details for two professional references.
- You must hold (or apply for) a current Working With Children Check (NSW). Red Cross can assist you to apply for this check.
- You must hold a valid NSW Drivers Licence of class C or above.
