Why Choose to volunteer with Red Cross?

  • You can help improve lives and create a positive impact in your community
  • It’s an opportunity to enhance your skills & knowledge & gain new experiences
  • You’ll be helping Red Cross to support vulnerable people across Australia

The program

Good social connections are essential for all aspects of health, especially as we age. Red Cross Delivered Meals supports older and vulnerable people who might find it difficult to cook food for themselves due to age, disability, or a temporary condition. Volunteers deliver meals to clients in their local community, providing them with a friendly face each week and supporting them to live independently in their own homes.

As a Delivered Meals volunteer, you will either assist with packing of healthy and nutritious meals or use your own vehicle to deliver meals to client’s homes. Services are offered on weekdays, with volunteers being rostered on for regular shifts. More than just delivering meals, volunteers also provide a friendly face to clients helping to increase their social connection.  .

The opportunity

For this role you will need the ability to relate to and empathise with a broad range of older people, including those with different lived experiences, abilities, and cultures.

If you will be delivering meals, you will need a current full Australian driver’s licence, or equivalent, an excellent driving record, and ideally be able to lift up to 15kgs. You will be using your own vehicle to deliver meals; Red Cross can provide partial reimbursements for fuel.

You will be comfortable using phone/tablets and be able to learn the app-based service management system.
All volunteers will need to complete a National Criminal Check and Working with Vulnerable People Check. Red Cross will ensure you have training, ongoing support and access to other opportunities within the world’s largest humanitarian network.

The impact

As a Delivered Meals volunteer, you will help vulnerable older people to improve their social connection and quality of life by providing a positive and respectful service. In return, you will have the opportunity to meet many diverse people, as well as feeling the satisfaction of giving back to others.

You’ll be part of the Red Cross Aged & Community Care team that works to support older and vulnerable people across Australia through a range of volunteer-based programs.

Application requirements

A National Criminal History Check prior to commencement and renewed every three/five years (varied renewal depending on program, Red Cross will arrange this).

Any checks as required by your state/territory (e.g. Working with Vulnerable People Check, Working with Children’s Check, proof of COVID-19 vaccination, etc.)

For roles involving transport, a valid driver’s licence is required.
