The program
The Register of Appropriate Persons (RASP) provides support to young people who are required to be interviewed by police. The objective is to support these young people at times when another responsible adult (parent/carer/lawyer/case manager) is unavailable. The RASP volunteer presence helps young people feel confident that their rights will be respected, they have support to make conscious and informed decisions about how they interact with police during interviews and/or custody or charging processes, and that they will be treated fairly.
The opportunity
For this role you will need good communication skills and the ability to engage and work with diverse young people. You will not be providing legal advice to young people, however, demonstrating empathy, compassion and calmness during young people’s police interactions is integral.
This role suits someone over the age of 18 who is a good listener and can remain neutral and impartial within a justice environment. As a RASP Responder, you will support vulnerable young people facing a stressful and foreign situation.
Red Cross will ensure you have training, ongoing support, and access to other opportunities within the world’s largest humanitarian network.
Please note, this role cannot contribute to academic credits for students.

Application requirements
Due to the nature of working with young people, we will be required to conduct 2 reference checks if successful in this volunteer opportunity.
During your application please let us know your interests, motivations, skills or experience relating to this positions.
For this role you will be required to undertake a National Police Check, which will be organised by the Red Cross.
The role will also require you to hold or apply for a Working with Children Check and a current driver’s license. For this role you will be required to undertake a National Police Check, organised through Red Cross.
