- It’s an opportunity to enhance your skills & knowledge & gain new experiences
- You’ll be helping Red Cross to support vulnerable people across Australia
The Program
Having good social connections is essential for all aspects of health, especially as we age. Red Cross Transport supports people who are older or have a disability, and who have no means of getting to non-urgent medical appointments or social outings. Volunteers provide a door-to-door transport service, helping clients strengthen their capacity to participate in community life, maintain or regain independence, and stay living in their own home for longer.
As a Transport volunteer, you will use Red Cross vehicles help transport potentially multiple clients at once to health or social destinations both locally and regionally. The service operates on weekdays, with volunteers being rostered on for regular shifts either weekly or fortnightly. More than just transport, volunteers bring a kind and friendly energy to the role, ensuring clients receive a safe, courteous and respectful onboard experience.
The Opportunity
For this role you will need the ability to relate to and empathise with a broad range of older people, including those with different lived experiences, abilities, and cultures.
You will need a current full Australian driver’s licence, or equivalent, an excellent driving record, and ideally be able to lift up to 15kgs to assist clients with mobility aides.
You will be comfortable using phone/tablets and be able to learn the app based transport management and payment systems.
All volunteers will need to complete a National Criminal Check. Red Cross will ensure you have training, ongoing support and access to other opportunities within the world’s largest humanitarian network.
The Impact
As a Transport volunteer, you will help vulnerable people to improve their social connection and quality of life by providing a positive and respectful service. In return, you will have the opportunity to meet many diverse people, as well as feeling the satisfaction of giving back to others.
You’ll be part of the Red Cross Aged & Community Care team that works to support older and vulnerable people across Australia through a range of volunteer-based programs.
