The Program 

The Australian Red Cross Immigration Detention Monitoring Program (IDMP) conducts regular and frequent independent monitoring of immigration detention facilities across Australia. We observe the conditions of detention and the treatment of people in detention. We aim to ensure that their health, dignity, and wellbeing is being upheld and protected, raising any concerns with the Australian Government. In all activities, our volunteers, members, and staff are guided by the Fundamental Principles of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement.

The Opportunity 

Role of the Volunteer Program Officer is to provide administrative support to the IDMP program which including sensitive data about the conditions in immigration detention centres.

Duties include:

  • Providing logistical and administrative assistance to Lead Humanitarian Observers prior to, during, and after visits to immigration detention facilities
  • Scanning documents, entering data and other records management tasks in accordance with Red Cross record keeping policies and procedures
  • Conducting research on a range of issues, which could include public policy, emerging issues for people in detention and mapping trends in the sector
  • Supporting the IDMP team to develop tools and resources to facilitate operational work. 
  • Contributing to the development of strategic projects

As a volunteer, you will contribute to Australian Red Cross’ humanitarian diplomacy efforts to prevent and reduce harm and suffering and empower people in immigration detention. With the IDMP program, you would be required to conduct all activities in according in a neutral, impartial, and independent manner and aim to promote respect for fundamental humanitarian needs and adherence to relevant domestic and international standards governing detention. You would be highly sensitive to the confidentiality requirements of the program.

For this role you will need excellent data management and research skills and the ability to produce clear reports within short timeframes. You will be confident with using computers and will be required to learn to use Red Cross’ internal data management system.

You will need to provide a recent copy of your CV and provide details for two professional references. 

For this role you will be required to undertake a National Police Check, which will be organised through Red Cross. The role will also require you to hold or apply for a Working With Children Check or Working with Vulnerable People Check depending on your State/Territory.  Red Cross can assist you to apply for this check.
