About the role
In Search of Safety is a community education program that engages the Australian public in conversations related to forced migration. This position will work alongside Red Cross staff and volunteers to present interactive workshops that talk with school students and community groups about the asylum seeker journey and the reasons why people seek protection as refugees in Australia, whilst promoting compassion, harmony and social cohesion.
The primary role of a Lived Experience Community Speaker is to share personal experiences of seeking asylum and living in Australia to increase understanding and promote connection.
About you
- Lived experience in seeking asylum (in Australia or another country) and living in Australia.
- Positions are available for people granted an Australian permanent protection visa; Temporary Protection Visa (TPV) or Safe Haven Enterprise Visa (SHEV); OR arrived in Australia on another visa but have a refugee background. Those in the process of seeking asylum will also be considered.
- Comfortable speaking in public and to large groups of young people.
- Ability to travel to workshops across metro and possibly regional areas.
- Driver’s licence is ideal but not essential (shifts will be more limited without)
- Proficient level of conversational English
- Ability to work under close direction from senior employee.

This role is covered by the Social, Community, Home Care and Disability Services Award – Level 1. Salary $40.00 per hour including casual loading.
